Functional Resume Format

The functional resume format is perfect if you are applying for a job, but you are not very confident about your work background. In this format, you emphasize your skills and achievements rather that your experiences in your past jobs. This essentially highlights your most important assets and important mix of strengths so that the one assessing your resume will be able to see your good points. This way, you have a high chance of getting the interview for your dream job.

A functional resume format is written by organizing abilities, skills, and functions in clusters. You first write your educational background including the school you attended and the date of entry. A short list of achievements and extra-curricular activities while in school follows in bullet points. The next cluster would be your own set of unique skills. The top most skill should reflect your best quality. Beneath that is a list of all your knowledge, experiences, and achievements in that particular field. Strategically, however, you may replace that with the skill that is most needed in the job that you are applying for so that they can easily see that you are fit for the job. Your other skills and performances must follow in the same layout.

Finally, your brief work history, if you have any, is listed at the bottom of your resume. In some cases, however, past employments are intentionally omitted. This is strategic and in a way, deceiving, especially when you think that your work experiences are not relevant at all to the job that you want. This approach is perfect for fresh graduate students who normally do not have work backgrounds. This may also be best for those with questionable careers in the past.

Ultimately, this resume format works for those with limited job history or an employment background with several years out of employment. This is also good if you are trying to enter a career field different from what you have experienced. With the intention to reduce career blemish, the functional resume format may be your best marketing tool to get you the interview.

On the other hand, this resume type is the least preferred by most employers. Usually, they want to assess your capabilities in the context of your work experiences. They would hate to hunt for that information, especially when it is not there. This format also leaves the impression that you are trying to hide something. Despite that, this resume can always work. Just remember to write the details clearly, in a concise manner, and without lying.
